1. Civita di Bagnoregio, Italy

Essentially, Civita di Bagnoregio comprises of not one, but two obscure towns – Civita and Bagnoregio. While Civita, “ the Dying City”, is atop a remote hill that is only accessible through a long stone walkway and has only six all-year-round residents, Bagnoregio has the distinction of being the smaller of the two communities, with several buildings having been brought by elite Italian businessmen. Civita di Bagnoregio was fortunate enough to have been spared during the Renaissance, and now is regarded as a unique spectacle of Medieval European heritage.

2. Rothenburg, Germany

Often touted as one of Germany’s most mesmerising travel destinations, the Rothenburg gives you a trip down the memory lane, and into Medieval times and the Age of Renaissance. Also known as the Rothenburg ob der Tauber (“above the Tauber river”), the quaint little town has quaint houses, serene fountains, cobbled lanes, bay windows, gables, and dainty street signs, all of which together brings a bygone era to life. The town is particularly sensational in the evenings, when lamp posts cast their fluorescent yellow glow on the cobbled streets.

3. Rocamadour, France

This holy city can give jitters, to even the strongest at heart, with its steep rocky cliffs and dizzying valley sightings. The quaint castle city clings to the gorge above the meandering River Alzou (a tributary of River Dordogne), and seems like a scene straight out of a Tolkien’s novel, with its layered assembly of houses and audacious construction. The city offers several unique sightings, including the crypt of Saint-Amadour and the basilica of Saint-Sauveur, both of which have been designated as Heritage Sites by UNESCO. The most notable proponent of the beautiful French city is the Chapel of Miracles, where the Black Madonna is worshipped.

4. Bohinj, Slovenia

Encapsulated by the Alps, this charming and mysterious Slovenian valley town is probably the most picturesque sight in the south-eastern Alpine region. Geographically, the town comprises the Nomenj valley, Lake Bohinj, the Pokljuka and Jelovica plateaus, along with the Upper and Lower Bohinj Valleys. The lake is the biggest in slovenia, and absolutely breathtaking to look at. The dainty town has approximately twenty-four villages, all safely hidden from the hullabaloo of tourists and modernisation, and imbibed with a cheerfulness and mysterious disposition.

5. Cavtat, Croatia

Probably the only urban center in Konavle, Cavtat is also the largest town located on the Rat peninsula. This Croatian town is encapsulated by the peninsula of Sustjepan, and offers picturesque architecture, inspired and untarnished by its natural, and spiritual heritage. The town has a scenic setting, together with imposing hills bordering breathtakingly beautiful beaches. This gem of a destination is probably the most scenic, yet less-explored tourist destination on the Adriatic coast.
